Happy Chinese New Year 2008

New year with new clothes on, Dear dear is wearing Bossini and I am wearing the brown dress from some shop in parkway which I cannot remember the name and the orange dress from M)phosis. :D

Minna, shinnen omedetou gozaimasu.

Many happy things happened meanwhile, such as talking to a friend whom we did not talk to each other since pri4, planting balsam and taking a funny picture of the hamster sleeping on the roof. May this year be fruitful? May my braces be removed soon as well? ;p

Not to forget, I have got a new bed sheet as well, one that I got to choose for myself.

Valentine's Day fell on Chinese New Year period as well, but I have yet to celebrate due to my mother's birthday falling on the same day as well. I guessed I can never celebrate V day on the day itself. It was saddening in a sense when walking on the streets, I turned left and saw couples happily together, I turned right and saw people selling roses, I looked straight and saw restaurants having V day promotions and even when I closed my eyes, I got to hear radio playing V day dedications. Sigh.

Bad job experience

I was quite hesitant to blog about this, because it will remind me of the bad feelings and have the possibility of affecting future job prospects as well, but I wish that this can be a lesson for me to find a better job.

Same as before, there will not be any mentioning of company name as well as the names of the people involved. This is just in case I get sued for slander or whatever.

The interview took more than 3 hrs. I thought that if I did not get the job, it would be a sheer waste of my time. The people seemed unfriendly, almost treating the interviewees as being invisible, or worse, as obstacles in their path since the office was very messy and this made the passageway very narrow. The interviewer showed little sincerity, asking me to type to test my typing speed and yet he walked away while I was typing and I had to retype 3 times before he actually observed it. The pay package was attractive and he also employed me right on the spot.

He called before the actual work started and asked me to memorize 3 pages worth of chart of accounts which was not properly photocopied, with some parts of the codes missing.

On the first day of work, I was hurried to work on drafting financial statements with brief instructions like "just follow the past year workings" and "gathered all the questions together and ask". There was no introduction to the other staff nor was there information about the environment such as the location of the toilets.

The "retired" boss just stood behind or beside me and my friend, watching us work and gave many unhelpful comments such as "Have you finished?", "Very slow", "Time equals to money". When we have questions regarding the work and asked him, he plainly replied, "I don't know. Ask xxx."
He seemed to be very free just continuing his supervision with a lot of demoralizing remarks. I was trying my best to complete the assignment as fast as I could, however, there were problems with the fixed assets. Hence the assignment had to be put aside since that client cannot be contacted to clarify on the matter. The next assignment was completed more or less smoothly. The third assignment had some problems with taxation, and I had no idea on how to proceed since my experience regarding tax was null. The same situation happened, thus the assignment had to be put aside as well.

The next few days were on GST computation for submission. He kept repeating "Must do properly, else will get fine." and "Do faster else late submission will also get fine." Anyone find those comments helpful? They just kept interrupting my flow of thoughts.

I wasn't able to complete the task in a day due to my inexperience on the matter. He kind of forced me to do OT everyday. (There was no pay for OT and he kept glaring at me and saying stuff like "Finish what's for today before you go") I inquired about the urgency of the assignment with my senior and she said that it can be continue on the next day. She left and I was forced to continue finishing the bank statement part with alterations to the format. I knew it was part of my job so I just tried whatever I can.

The next day, I did the rest and was almost done. I had stuff after work and had to go. (The actual dismissal time was 5:45pm but it was around 6 plus then.) He glared and grumbled the same stuff. I left because xxx said I can leave.

The following Monday, I finished the drafted copy and faxed to the client as instructed by the senior. On the copy were the company number and my name for the contact purposes. The phone was with many extensions, so I never took notice when it rang. He picked up and when he heard my name, he eyed me with that suspecting look and questioned me loudly, "Who's that?"
That expression showed me that he suspected that I used the company's phone to call my relatives or friends. How insulting on my integrity! I picked up the phone and talked politely to the client regarding how much he wanted to claim for the GST input. I had to make amendments and to resubmit the amended copy. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until the client's form 5 cropped up. I had to call the client again to instruct him about the form as well as explained the problem. While I was calling, he was interrupting and forced me to listen to his "not-very-relevant" ranting. I did want to ignore him, but he kept calling my name. The assignment had to be delayed due to the absence of form 5

I was rushed to do e-filing in another office nearby. There were two stacks of clients' files and the instructions were given in a flow of words that I tried to catch since there wasn't time to copy them. As it was also the first time I was doing it, I was very slow, being careful and trying to familiarize with the procedures. There was a camera in the room. Never mind about that, I was trying my best to clear those files since I abhorred the thought of the client being fined due to my slowness. The deadlines for the earliest due within those stacks were either way overdue or due on 31 Jan. I made some minor mistakes which I found and corrected along the way. He still came, watching and disturbing with more rantings like "Must look at the payments carefully to avoid paying more than they paid us", "I think you looked smart, but how come so slow". Additional task of printing unread emails from the company inbox and distributing them made me busier than ever. I felt that I was still able to cope well, even though the email seemed to have a problem of jamming at one of the pages. I still completed the task.

One morning, he entered and complained about the toilet rolls being used up so fast and etc, even suspecting that people were taking them home for personal usage. I was really disgusted at his behavior of being so calculative on minor stuff. I mentioned to another senior after he left and she said, "Last time was worse, one roll of toilet paper distributed to each of the staff and ordered them to use for a certain period." Such a weird behavior not observed in previous companies I had worked for.

I worked OT on 31 Jan and completed all the e-filing. When it was 7+pm, while I was almost completing the filings, xxx added a few more such documents for e-filing and I finished them off as well. It was almost 8 before I took a final check at the inbox for new unread mails to print. He entered the room and asked me, "Why you worked until so late?"
He looked at the computer screen and the immediate expression and the tone in saying "What mail are you sending?" was again telling me his thought that I was checking my own emails using the company's computer. What a joke. I explained and left.

The next morning I did as instructed by xxx to change the audit report copies. There was no dustbin in the room and hence, I put the to-be-disposed copies on the floor which I will clear them when I am done. The table was full of documents so there was nowhere else to put them. He entered and rambled on about the papers lying on the floor. I told him there was no dustbin in the room and he merely took a box and labeled it dustbin.

When I returned to the other office to get the documents for replacement, he called me into another room just to talk crappy stuff. He asked if I had questions. I asked about the working environment. (I know it seemed wrong to reflect such stuff from a newcomer but I just cannot take it and asked when the chance came.) I have no idea why I got so emotional while talking, but I asked about the weirdness not experienced in previous companies. His face blackened. He said that if I am not happy, I can leave. I was more or less talking on stuff I could not comprehend, the way we were taken into the job, the way of addressing colleagues, the way he watched us until I felt like a prisoner when I wasn't even slacking at all and and the way he kept talking and interfering with our work when he do not seemed to understand.

He took me into another room and more quarrels and unfriendly words broke out. On the first day at work, he said stuff like "When you come late for work, you can compensate the hours by working during lunchtime, take home to work or continue after working hours", compensate what when the senior told me the previous girl before me quit because she was given the same wrong idea as me, the pay will still be deducted as usual, no compensating hours such stuff. He said about me asking too many irrelevant questions about work when what I asked is to ensure my work is done properly with the emphasis of filing on time, without paying more than insured. He also mentioned on my interview that I can learn while working, now gave me this kind of crap. He can say one thing and the next moment do the opposite thing. He mentioned that I could clear all my doubts in one shot by asking him right after I completed my assignment.
I told him that it was simply not true when the actual response will just be another assignment handed to me. He agreed until so reasonably, then what was the previous sentence for?! He even said bad stuff about the senior was acting when all along I was working next to her. She was there for 5 yrs and still has to be subject to such accusations. He did mentioned about why he have to trust me, and I agreed that trust was not given outright but to supervise until such extent that he really made me so uncomfortable, he should just do everything on his own. I just cannot get my point across and I was really pissed. I just wished he will understand but need not agree with me. He merely used the past to impose on the present.

The most upsetting part was when he said I never completed a single thing during the few days I worked. I did so much stuff that I can list and even worked OT without pay just because of responsibility and his words made my blood boiled. It was as though all my efforts had gone down the drain. I replied, "Just give me my salary and I will leave."
I defended that my questions asked was not irrelevant by telling my discovery that morning regarding a client's company type. He demanded to know which company. He really shouted at me. I was so upset, chiding him straight in the face that since he wanted me to leave, on what basis should I tell him that. He just said I probably cannot even remember the company's name.

They later asked me if I still wanted to continue working under the same supervision. I said I wished to work for long term, but the working environment just does not suit me. They asked if my friend wants to leave as well, I merely said "You have to ask her yourself." I even asked kindly whether my resignation was too sudden, and whether they needed me to work for a few more days in order to find a replacement. They just don't appreciate, so I left on that day. Why did I even bother asking...?

While packing stuff, I told xxx that even if I could not remember the company's name, I did recall one of the director's name and signature.
I have answered properly for the work I did but I was still left upset at all those hurtful words and actions. I was angry at the man, but I will not direct my frustrations to the rest, and so I left with a clear conscience.

To me now, I guess working environment as well as culture matters more than pay.

Queen of the night

Haha I found that in Wenwei's blog also have queen of the night but a mild version and here I will put my favourite version.

My 22nd birthday

Quite saddening, isn't it? In just a wink of eye, I became one year older... getting nearer to the 30s auntie age. Sigh... no matter how tiring is life, or work... there will bound to be happiness somewhere... something to look forward to... yea, my birthday celebration. :D

Alas, that day happened to fall on a Sunday which my F7 lecturer wanted to have class... from 2pm to 7pm +++... >_< "' and hence my celebration was pushed forward to Fri and Sat. My super nice dear dear, after my "constant reminder", bought my mom's present for me which was Baked Alaska log cake from Island creamery @ $28 and carried all the way to my house... :)

My family and dear played mahjong before cutting the cake. Wow... my dear improved a lot on his mahjong skill.

The Baked Alaska is very appropriately named, with the meringue as the top layer resembling the snow, the thick middle layer of ice-cream (super cold) resembling the thick ice beneath the snow and the cake as the land. The sweetness decrease from the meringue to the cake. The hardness increase in the same direction. Well, as for the red berries in between... hmmm... take them as carcasses buried in the ice waiting to be discovered someday.

On Sat, my dear and I went to Serangoon Garden to eat guo tie and kway chup. Our dessert was the infamous Alcoholic Anonymous from ICE³. While waiting for ICE³ to open, I bought a box of mini oranges. The oranges reminded me of a time when I was cooking at my dear's house, while preparing and cooking, my dear peeled these small oranges and put them in my mouth. Very sweet and romantic, though weird picture... :) The box suddenly gave way when we walked out of ICE³ and we ended up picking oranges on the pavement and roadside. A few were squashed and had to be forgo, but majority still went home, so never mind about that incident.

A lesson to learn is that next time when buying heavy loads of fruits, take 2 plastic bags over it to prevent unnecessary loss.

Kusu and St John Islands

The view of the sea from inside the ferry, the map of Kusu island for easy navigation, the tortoise sanctuary was filled with Red-eared terapins and Snake-Neck tortoises and the biggest arrived on "shore". Kusu island was such a nice getaway from city life and noisy beaches ( compared to East Coast park ).

The biggest tortoise was not moving, perhaps sleeping inside the shelter ( I thought it was dead... ). I am sitting on the tortoise statue. Dom dom fell asleep after our lunch. An unexpected surprise? I was hoping to see dog-faced water snake but never get to see one here, and then I chanced upon this at the temple... a reticulated python! :D Poor tortoises... :(

Since the same ferry will go to St john after Kusu, we decided to go as well, the price will be more worthwhile ($15 per pax for 2 islands). Luckily we went there this time round and not save for the next year... the island was not enjoyable at all, with nothing much to see. I was a bit disappointed, but still enjoyed overall from Kusu island trip.

Taken on St John island, the last picture showed a weird creature which looked like a caterpillar with six legs only. The rest of the body drags behind.

The rubber bands are highly uncomfortable.

On my latest visit to the dentist, not only did my power chains get changed, there was an input of 2 rubber bands pulling the upper and lower jaws. These rubber bands have to be changed very time I eat, well, that will be very troublesome since must 自己亲自动手 to change and I am not good at it, causing the rubber band to recoil on my gums at times... Aw.... pain!

Heard that this procedure is quite common so I shan't post any pictures. Due to the fact that the rubber bands were in place for 1 day only, hence when I woke up in the morning today, I could hardly bear to open my mouth. The feeling was like the jaws were glued together.

Kamisama mou sukoshi dake

My review after watching the show twice, one incomplete (watched 1 episode only) during sec school then and a complete one yesterday and today.

The first time I watched the show through television, that one episode, the one in which Masaki (Fukada Kyoko) is making the speech in the hall, inspired me to research on AIDS and wrote a composition on that to submit as holiday homework.

At that time, I tried to put myself in the shoes of a HIV patient and tried to construct the mindset of one. Now looking back, I guess the mentality is still far off from actually being the sufferer. Now that I got the chance to re-watch the whole show on the computer, I realized that although what I wrote then may be too happy (or simple in a sense), the whole show was too dramatically sad. Well, at least that is what I feel.

While watching it this time, I opened up another window for AIDS information to refresh my memory. I guessed I was being sadistic, trying to picture how Masaki will die from AIDS since there are many ways one can die from AIDS. The story in my opinion, gave more details regarding the emotional aspect and neglected about the disease aspect.

This is about AIDS, which is unique, like how spinocerebellar degeneration is unique in "One litre of tears". I just thought that the show could have paid more attention to the details surrounding that disease as well. The impression was that the producers were trying hard to create a beautiful picture, hence only headache and dizziness were captured. There wasn't diarrhea, vomit or spasm captured or even mentioned. How to convince the audience about the physical suffering of the patient? Using words like meningitis is simply not enough, and they never even explain much about what is that.

The show started out well even though the plot was unbelievable at times, but it gave way to exaggerations and the characters got increasingly irritating with lots of conflicts and contradicting moves. At times I really feel like strangling Masaki, showing selfishness and consideration at inappropriate times. Kaoru (in this show) as well as the parents of Masaki were irritating most of the time. Their reactions seemed just to lengthen the show. Incredibly, Keigo (Takeshi Kaneshiro) seems healthier than Masaki even though he smoked dozens of cigarettes in almost every episode and Masaki did not get infected with opportunistic virus and bacteria by kissing him and being a 2nd-hand smoker.

The female doctor's acting was superbly lousy. She came across as robotic, without emotions in her words and expressionless without empathy.

Come to think of it, "I love you with my body and soul." seemed super fake when Masaki slept with 2 other guys before Keigo and still can say such a thing to him.

To add on, Keigo seemed shocked to hear that he may get HIV and still sleep with, the now confirmed HIV positive, Masaki again. Yet, he never get HIV... wow, maybe he is immune to that strain, but the baby as well? So miraculous.

The last scene where Masaki was dead was super funny. I was like wondering if she lied down on the floor, spread her wedding gown nicely then prepare to die. Isn't it weird that a moment she was hugging the baby and the next moment baby was so far from her? I thought babies tend to cling to the mother even when they are curious to explore.

A disappointment indeed, though few emotional parts were carried well, the story wasn't convincing and I never tear at all. Maybe if one never watch 1 litre of tears, this can appear appealing and good work but after watching that drama then this, this cannot make it and even if the theme was good, the plot wasn't strong.

Haha, if my dear dear is Keigo, after labor and the baby cried non-stop that scene...

Masaki: "Why is the baby still crying non-stop? The situation never improve, what if the baby was infected with HIV? What if I passed the HIV to her?"
Keigo:"See la, ask you not to give birth liao, you still want... now complained to me for what?! It is not as though I never warn you like that."
Masaki:"Will the child grow up to have heartache and I have passed away and not by her side?"
Keigo:"Why didn't you consider that then lei? Now then think a bit too late..."

Japanese and Chinese gardens

These were some of the pictures taken in the Japanese garden.
Below were pictures of the scenery.

Moving on to the Chinese garden... ...

Below were pictures of the scenery and a huge monitor lizard.

Funny stuff:

The candid photos were not uploaded at the request of dear dear, but can roughly describe a bit. :p

1: Dear riding on tiger, pulling his shirt to cover his crotch area, blur blur expression.
2: Dear riding on tiger, hand caressing his hair in '70s style
3: Dear riding on tiger, both hands protecting his crotch area.

We went after a heavy downpour, hence the ground was wet and muddy. I was wearing slipper and dear was wearing sandals. When I walked on the grass to avoid the puddle on the stone path, I went "Eewk, stepped into mud...". Dear dear laughed.
After which when he walked trying to go further to avoid the same patch as me, he went "Ahhh... ahhh... ahhh...", same fate as me.

Funny things dear said:

"My nipple is getting burned from friction."
This was due to my handphone was put into his pocket on the shirt, then I taking it out quite frequently to take photos.

"It's like music coming from my chest."
My handphone rang while it was inside his pocket, just imagine if it was in silent mode... will it be worse?

Toy museum and Suntec City trip

This post i guessed I have to make it less wordy and more pictures, since the whole day, the whole trip was so packed with activities.
The above pictures were taken at the toy museum, I found the place to be enriching and interesting. Thanks to dear for his recommendation. The peacock toy, in my opinion, would be the ideal kind of toy. It seems appealing and cute to have such a big bird walking in the house.

After that, we went to Suntec city to eat Subway and proceed to purchase movie tickets ( show was at 5.15 pm ). Meantime ( about 3 hrs to start of movie ), we went to the book fair.

The movie we watched was "Alvin and the chipmunks".

The show was not bad in my opinion, being so vibrant and cute. However, my dear gave it a 6/10 rating, saying the storyline was too expected.

These were the 3 out of 6 Christmas trees which we found to be nice. By the way, they were made of recycled materials. The rest looked skeletal.

Following a recipe fully can be tough at times

Although my dear dear never get to taste this dish, he shopped for the ingredients with me. I needed canned pacific clams and while browsing for the item, we get stock ( needed as well ). The canned pacific clams that we came across, the only brand, was quite expensive ( was more than ten dollars for a can ), making me so confused whether to proceed buying to cook the dish or not to buy and not to cook this dish. Dear dom dom then continue searching and came across cans of pacific clam stock ( something like that ) which was $3.30 per can if I remember correctly. Great! I saved on the stock and pacific clams and get that instead, so much more cheaper.

While cooking this dish then, the stock was more than enough, but not enough to consume the excess on its own as another dish, so I poured everything. In the end, it turned out quite soupy, instead of just gravy. Nevertheless, the dish was delicious, so the recipe book was worth the money.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

The above pictures were taken at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. It was raining heavily that day, hence my dear and I waited for quite some time in the shelter at the main entrance before venturing onto the tracks.

Well, we had limited time taking photographs because of a date with my friends later in the evening. Although this was our second time in the nature reserve, I only spotted few animals. Quite disappointed because I thought that it will be exciting to capture photographs of animals in the wild, with the amount of luck needed to spot them and take their picture.

Dear dear consoled me and told me not to expect for animals, but to take it as a good form of exercise.

Snake! Wee~ get to see it in the wild.

This happened while I was on my way home from my Japanese lesson, I think. I passed by a drain which was quite flooded with water and I saw many fishes swimming around. As I walked on and continued looking at the same time, I spotted this snake near a dark corner and I thought it was dead.

The snake wasn't moving and was floating in the same position all the while. I was even thinking of fishing it out with a branch to measure its length... anyway I couldn't find any. I then tried to take photos of it. The K770i wasn't really made to do night shots, even with the torch on and it was unable to zoom at 3.2 mp, making me place my handphone quite close to the water. I was scared that if I got butter fingers, my phone will confirmed be lost in the dark waters and spoiled. Made me miss the presence of my dear who have k800i which can take better night shots. Oh, after I finished photographing the snake all I liked, the snake started to move... still alive wor.

The snake was identified as a dog-faced water snake.

Another belated post

This I thought I have added in the November posts, but I have forgotten. Anyway, here it comes. The desire to make them came after eating Ramly burger in NUS and a pasir malam near my house.

The burgers that I have made did not taste as flavorful as the original, although they were less salty and oily. Yet I liked my edition with the addition of crispy lettuce and juicy tomato slices, making them more refreshing and healthy.
